Homer Background Check Records

A Homer background check starts with the Homer Police Department and the Alaska Department of Public Safety. Homer sits at the tip of the Kenai Peninsula, and the police department here handles local arrest records and criminal reports. The state DPS office in Anchorage runs the main criminal history repository for all of Alaska. You can search Homer court cases on CourtView and request a full criminal history report through the DPS self-service portal. This page covers how to find and request a background check for the Homer area.

Homer Police Department Records

The Homer Police Department is the main law enforcement agency in the city. The department keeps arrest records for all incidents in Homer. According to the 2022 Crime in Alaska report, Homer PD made 270 adult arrests and 5 juvenile arrests that year. You can ask the department for copies of incident reports and arrest records by contacting them directly. The Homer Police Department works with the Alaska State Troopers on cases that cross city lines or need state help.

The Homer Police Department records page shows how to get police records and criminal history data from the department. Homer PD makes public arrest records available to anyone who asks under Alaska law.

The department also takes part in the statewide Alaska Public Safety Information Network run by DPS. This means Homer arrest data feeds into the central state criminal history system. When you request a background check through DPS, Homer records show up in that report.

The Alaska Department of Public Safety runs the official background check program for the whole state, including Homer. A name-based check costs $20. A fingerprint-based check runs $35 and gives a fuller record. Under AS 12.62.160, any person can ask for the criminal history of another person in Alaska. You do not need to live in Homer or even in Alaska to make the request.

Homer has a local fingerprinting location at 40891 Morningstar Rd, Homer, AK 99603. The phone number is (907) 299-2225. This makes it easy for Homer residents to get prints done without a trip to Anchorage. The DPS fingerprinting locations page has the full list of sites across the state. Prints must be on an FD-258 FBI fingerprint card. Cards with smudges or bad ink will be rejected and must be redone.

To request a Homer background check by mail, send the form and a check or money order for $20 (name-based) or $35 (fingerprint-based) to: Criminal Records and Identification Bureau, 5700 E Tudor Road, Anchorage, AK 99507. Phone: 907-269-5767. Email: dps.criminal.records@alaska.gov.

The online option works too. Visit the DPS self-service portal to start a name-based background check. The system sends a secure link to your email. You fill in your Social Security number and driver's license number. The report covers adult misdemeanor and felony offenses in Alaska. It shows convictions, dismissals, and not-guilty findings.

Note: The DPS report only covers Alaska state records; for a check that includes other states, you need a fingerprint-based FBI search as well.

Homer Court Records Search

Homer court cases go through the Kenai Peninsula court system. The Alaska Court System case search lets you look up cases on CourtView by name or case number. The system shows party names, case type, and status. It is free to use. Keep in mind that a CourtView search is not the same as a full background check. Some cases drop off the site after time, and sealed or confidential files will not show.

Under AS 22.35.030, the court system pulls criminal records from the public site 60 days after an acquittal or full dismissal. Juvenile cases, sealed files, and cases tied to certain minor offenses under AS 04.21.078 also stay off CourtView.

For paper copies of Homer case files, contact the Alaska Trial Courts clerk in the Kenai area. A certified copy costs $10 for the first and $3 for each extra copy in the same order. Staff research runs $30 per hour. Cash works for in-person visits. Mail requests take a check or money order.

Homer Background Check and Public Records

The Alaska Public Records Act at AS 40.25.110 to 40.25.125 gives the public the right to request government records, including criminal history files. Agencies must reply within 10 business days. The Alaska Department of Law at (907) 269-5100 can help with questions about the law.

Under this act, a Homer background check can pull arrest records, court filings, and sex offender data. The Alaska Sex Offender Registry lets you search by name or location for Homer and all of Alaska. Under AS 18.65.087, the database shows full name, photo, address, offense, and status for each person on the list. People with non-aggravated offenses register for 15 years under AS 12.63.020. Those with aggravated offenses register for life.

The Alaska Department of Corrections runs an inmate lookup for state prisons. Homer falls under the Kenai Peninsula area, and inmates from Homer may be held at Wildwood Correctional Complex. You can also call VINElink at (800) 247-9763 to check on an inmate.

A CourtView search is free but it is not a full Homer background check on its own. The court site drops acquittal records after 60 days under AS 22.35.030. Sealed records under AS 12.62.180 do not show at all. The DPS criminal history check at $20 for a name search or $35 for prints fills those gaps. Use both tools for the best results. The DPS file pulls from the Alaska Public Safety Information Network, which holds adult arrest and conviction data from every agency in the state.

Sealing Arrest Records in Homer

Alaska has no general expungement law. That means most criminal records stay on file for good. Under AS 12.62.180, a person can ask to seal an arrest record if they were acquitted, had the charges dismissed, or were released without a formal charge. If a conviction came from that arrest, sealing is not an option except in rare juvenile cases.

To seal a Homer arrest record, you file with the Alaska Department of Public Safety. You must list the dates, charges, and what happened with the case. Court papers showing dismissal or acquittal help. Once sealed, the record drops from public view but law enforcement can still see it for certain checks.

Note: A sealed record in Homer is not the same as an erased record; it stays in the system but is hidden from most public searches.
