Wasilla Background Check Records
A Wasilla background check pulls from the Wasilla Police Department records desk, the Palmer trial court, and the state DPS criminal history portal. Most adult court files in the Mat-Su area are open to the public. You can search CourtView for free, ask the city for a police report, or get a state criminal history printout. This page lays out each step. Pick the source that fits the type of record you need for the city.
Wasilla Records Snapshot
Wasilla Police Department
The Wasilla Police Department runs law enforcement for the city. The department keeps arrest records, incident reports, and accident reports. You can stop in to report an incident, ask for a copy of a report, or check on a case. The Wasilla Police works inside the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and shares cases with the Alaska State Troopers and the Palmer Police on joint files.
For an overview of the department, see the Wasilla Police Department page.
The page lists hours, phones, and the records request process. The department asks each requester to use the public records form on the city site. Note: Wasilla Police staff often run a background check tied to a job application as part of hiring, but the public path through the records desk is separate.
Wasilla Police Records Requests
The City of Wasilla provides a public records request service for any Wasilla background check on a city case. You can submit a request online, by mail, or in person at the police department. The Records team handles requests under the Alaska Public Records Act at AS 40.25, which sets a 10 business day reply rule for most files. Fees may apply for copies of arrest reports, incident reports, and accident reports.
For the request form and steps, see Wasilla Police Records.
The page lists fee info, the request form, and the records contact email. For a Wasilla background check tied to a court date, you may also need a case number from the Palmer trial court. The court covers the city for both criminal and civil matters.
The city site at cityofwasilla.gov/331/Records is the best place to start any records request. The form is short. You fill in your name, phone, and a note on what you need. Staff then pull the file and call or email you with the cost. Most requests close in under two weeks. If the file sits with a different agency, the records desk will tell you where to go next. They do not hold court files, so for a case record you must go through the Palmer trial court.
Wasilla Background Check Crime Data
Crime data helps put a Wasilla background check in context. The Wasilla Police Department and the Palmer Police Department reported a combined 70 violent crimes in 2022. That count covers the two main city departments in the Mat-Su area. Property crime and theft make up the bulk of local police calls. The Alaska DPS annual crime report breaks the numbers down by city and type. You can read the full stats on the DPS site under the Uniform Crime Reporting page. These numbers do not include state trooper cases filed outside city limits, so the total for the borough runs higher than the city count alone.
Wasilla Court Records
Court records for Wasilla are held by the Alaska Court System's Palmer Court at 435 South Denali Street, Palmer, AK 99645. The court is part of the 3rd Judicial District. The Palmer trial court hears all criminal and civil cases for the Wasilla area. To search the docket, use CourtView at courts.alaska.gov. The site shows case number, party names, charge type, and key dates for adult cases.
Some files do not show on CourtView. Under AS 22.35.030, the court system pulls a criminal record from public view 60 days after a clean dismissal or acquittal. Under AS 12.62.180, a person can ask the court to seal an arrest record if no charge was filed or the case ended in their favor. For a paper copy, ask the Palmer court clerk in person. Certified copies cost $10 for the first page and $3 for each one after. For a wider view of Mat-Su files, see Mat-Su criminal records.
The Mat-Su Pretrial Facility in Palmer holds all bookings for arrests in the borough. To find a current inmate, use the Alaska Department of Corrections inmate search at doc.alaska.gov or call VINElink at (800) 247-9763. The DOC tool shows name, booking date, charges, and the current facility. If someone posted bail and left, the DOC tool may not list them, but the court record will still show the charge and the next hearing date.
You can reach the Palmer court clerk by phone at (907) 746-8181 or by email at 3PACopy@akcourts.us. The mailing address is 435 South Denali Street, Palmer, AK 99645-6437. For copies, the first page of a document costs $5 and each page after that costs $3. Certified copies cost $10 for the first page and $3 for each one after. You can pay with cash in person, or by check, card, or money order. A Wasilla background check that needs a certified court document should plan for these costs up front.
State Sources for Wasilla
For a state-level Wasilla background check, the Alaska DPS portal at backgroundcheck.dps.alaska.gov takes name and fingerprint requests. A name check costs $20. A fingerprint check costs $35 and pulls the most complete record. The DPS Criminal Records Bureau on East Tudor Road in Anchorage runs the program for all Alaska cities. Under AS 12.62.160, anyone may ask for their own state criminal history.
The state sex offender registry under AS 12.63 lets you search by name or by Wasilla address. Under AS 12.63.020, the registration term is 15 years for non-aggravated offenses or life for aggravated and repeat offenders. Care role checks under AS 47.05 go through the state Department of Health, not the city police.
Note: For a quick Wasilla background check that may need court paperwork, get the case number from CourtView first, then mail the request to the Palmer court clerk.
Sealing is worth a note here. Under AS 12.62.180, a person who was arrested but never charged, or whose case ended in a full acquittal, can ask the court to seal that arrest record. The process starts with a written motion to the Palmer court. The judge reviews the file and decides if the seal applies. Once sealed, the record drops from CourtView and from the DPS printout. A sealed file will not show on a standard Wasilla background check through either the court or the state portal. The person can then say "no record" on most forms. The sex offender registry under AS 18.65.087 is a separate list and is not affected by a court seal order.
